Invasive Species Week

Invasive species are plants, animals and other living things that have been introduced beyond where they would naturally be found. They’re bad news because they can outcompete native wildlife for food, space and resources. They can spread rapidly, disrupt habitats, introduce diseases and threaten local wildlife. Some can even harm our health!
Himalayan balsam, Spanish bluebells, grey squirrels and American signal crayfish are just some of the invasive species you may know or recognise.
Invasive Species Week (22 – 28 June) is an annual event which aims to raise awareness of invasive species and celebrate action in preventing their spread.
It’s a great time to consider things we can all do to help tackle the threats posed by invasive species.
For more information see North WalesWildlife Trust.
Yellow-Legged Asian Hornet
Recently the first recording of a Yellow-Legged Asian Hornet in Wales was near Wrexham. It is a highly invasive predator that poses a severe threat to honeybees and native pollinators.
If you spot one please report here.

Identify Yellow-Legged Asian Hornet:
Does it look very black?
Has it got a dark abdomen with a wide orange stripe on 4th segment?
Do its legs look as if they have been dipped in yellow paint?
Has it got a black head with an orange face?
Is it’s thorax black and velvety?
